Questions 11.30
Ways to indicate a new paragraph?: indent first line, hanging indent, bold or colored typeface.
What are some things to look out for when hyphenating text?:
Try to leave at least 2 characters on the line and 3 following, avoid hyphenating proper nouns.
Define font hinting. Why is it necessary?
Font hinting: using a rasterized grid to display letter forms that look right to the human eye. At low screen resolutions, hinting is critical for producing a clear, legible text. What is letterspacing/tracking? How do you track in Illustrator or InDesign?
Tracking is the process of loosening or tightening a block of text by adjusting the size of the text height. To manipulate tracking in Illustrator or InDesign, type or select a numeric value for Tracking (looks like A over A) in the Character panel.Define Kerning? Name 8 kerning pairs. How do you kern in InDesign or Illustrator?
Kerning is the process of adding or subtracting space between specific pairs of characters. You can automatically kern type using metrics kerning or optical kerning. Metrics kerning uses kern pairs, which are included with most fonts. Kern pairs contain information about the spacing of specific pairs of letters. Some of these are: LA, P., To, Tr, Ta, Tu, Te, Ty, Wa, WA, We, Wo, Ya, and Yo. To kern in Illustrator or InDesign, type or select a numeric value for kerning (looks like A V) in the Character panel. What is wordspacing?
Word spacing refers to the size of the space between words.Explain DIN
DIN, an acronym for the German Deutsches Institut für Normung (German Institute for Standardization), and the name of an increasingly large realist sans-serif typeface family. The design was based on a 1905 typeface for the Royal Prussian Railway Administration and was originally used for schematics and blueprints. As the typeface grew in popularity, it was released as a metal type, made into stencils for use on vehicles and in train yards, and used for street and building signage. DIN's structure has been accredited as an early forerunner of the typographic grid and widely used by signage and corporate identities around the world. What is a baseline grid?
A baseline grid is an imaginary grid upon which type sits. The baseline pf a piece of type can be forced to 'snap' to this grid to maintain continuity across the pages of a design. The grid in Baseline is composed of 4 basic columns, for more flexibility each column can be divided in 2 units. How many characters per line is optimal? Is there a range?
Optimal words per line is between 40-80.
Optimal words per line is between 40-80.
Define aesthetic text alignment (optically hanging punctuation)
Hanging punctuation controls the alignment of punctuation marks for a specific paragraph. Paragraph alignment determines the margin from which the punctuation hangs. What is a typographic river?
A typographic river occurs in justified text blocks when the separation of the words leaves gaps of white space in several lines. A river effect is created where white space gaps align through the text.
What is a widow?
A paragraph-ending line that falls at the beginning of the following page/column, thus separated from the rest of the text.
What is an orphan?
are words or short lines at the beginning or end of a paragraph, which are left dangling at the top or bottom of a column, separated from the rest of the paragraph. -avoid at all costs.

things
What are small capitals? How are they different than setting something in ALL CAPS? Does your font have small caps? If not name a font that does.are uppercase characters set at the same height and weight as surrounding lowercase letters or text figures. They are used in running text to prevent capitalized words from appearing too large on the page, and as a method of emphasis or distinctiveness for text alongside or instead of italics or whenbold is inappropriate.
What are ligatures? Why are they used? When are they not used? What are common ligatures? Does your font have ligatures? If not name a font that does.
are combinations of characters that were designed because, in metal typesetting, the overhanging ascenders in the letter 'f' would crash into an ascender or the dot of an i if it directly followed the f. ligatures have better results in photographic or digital settings as well because the ascender of the 'f' and the dot of the letter i are designed to join instead of arbitrarily overlapping. If extra letter spacing is used in a text, however, these combination of characters have to be set separately.
What is the difference between a foot mark and an apostrophe?
A punctuation mark, and sometimes a diacritic mark used for three main reasons: to omit one or more letters, mark a possessive case, and mark plurals.
What is the difference between an inch mark and a quote mark (smart quote)?
inch mark- two straight vertical lines making up the symbol denoting to the unit of measurement inches. Quotation marks-punctuation marks appearing at the beginning and ending of a quote. Smart quotation marks have a curve to them.
What is a hyphen, en dash and em dashes, what are the differences and when are they used?h
Hyphen- punctuation mark used to join words and to separate syllables of a single word.
Em-dash- used in a sentence to indicate a break in thought.
en-dash-is traditionally half the width of an em dash and is used when denoting a range.

FONT STUDY
OLD STYLE:
-greater contrast between thick and thin strokes.
-the serifs on the ascenders are more wedge shaped
-diagonal stress (the thinnest parts of letters are at an angle rather than at the top and bottom)
EX: Bembo, Garamond, Centaur, Palatino, Century Oldstyle
TRANSITIONAL
-axis of the thick-thin contrast is almost vertical or slopes very slightly to the left
-base serifs are only a little or virtually not rounded at the bottom
-the vertical stance is almost always the case for the lowercase ) but not for the lowercase e.
-lowercase e has a horizontal cross-bar
-the top serifs of lowercase letters are roof-shaped
EX: Baskerville, Fournier, Caledonia, Times New Roman, Utopia.
_ Sans Serif: grotesque -

_ Sans Serif: grotesque -
- It was originally coined by William Thorowgood of Fann Street Foundry, the first person to produce a sans-serif type with lower case, in 1832
- The name came from the Italian word 'grottesco', meaning 'belonging to the cave'
- There is some contrast in thickness of strokes. They have squareness of curve, and curling close-set jaws
- The R usually has a curled leg and the G is spurred. The ends of the curved strokes are usually horizontal
- Examples of grotesque fonts: Grotesque No. 6, Condensed Sans No. 7, Monotype Headline Bold, Franklin Gothic, Akzidez Grotesk

-Adrian Frutiger is the typeface designer of Univers and continues to influence digital type.
-What makes the Univers grid so "unique" is that different weights and variations within the type family are designated by the use of numbers rather then names, but in the Univers family, the typeface names include both number and letter suffixes.

Weight - Relative darkness of the characters of a type font resulting from the relative thickness of the strokes-light, bold.
X-Height – the height of a lowercase “x” in a typeface. Can impact a typeface’s “visual weight” and readability and therefore impact on the typesize that we choose.
Cap Height - refers to the height of a capital letter above the baseline for a particular typeface.
Leading - the vertical spacing between baselines.
Tracking - the spacing between letters in a line of text.
Type is measured in points and picas which measure type size, line spacing, and column width.
Point - A unit of measurement for type sizes and spacing, which in the US and UK is one twelfth of a pica, or 0.013835 inch (0.351 mm), and in Europe is 0.015 inch (0.376 mm)
Pica - A size of letter in typewriting, with 10 characters to the inch (about 3.9 to the centimeter)
How many points in an inch?
72 points in 1 inch
0.4999 inches, about ½ inch
1 inch = 6 PostScript pica
1 PostScript Pica = 12 PostScript points

GRID / a network of horizontal and vertical lines superimposed over a map, building plan, etc., for locating point. a grating consisting of parallel bars
WHY USE A GRID / BENEFITS & FUNCTIONS / / organization. hierarchy, placement.
Leads to a more effective design. Adds user friendliness, alignment, balance. Quickens the design process.
MODULAR GRID / 4 columns, 4 rows
MARGINS / the blank space bordering the written or printed area on a page. a limit in a condition or process, beyond or below which something is no longer possible or acceptable
COLUMNS / one of two or more vertical sections of typed lines lying side by side on a page and separated by a rule or a blank space.
GRID MODULES / is the open square space in between the flow lines.
FLOWLINES / the connecting line or arrow between symbols on a flow chart or block diagram.
GUTTER / the white space formed by the inner margins of two facing pages, as of a book.
HIERARCHY / rank- order of importance
TYPOGRAPHIC COLOR / is the overall density of the ink on the page, determined mainly by the typeface, but also by the word spacing, leading, etc.
WHAT ARE WAYS TO ACHIEVE A CLEAR HIERARCHY / size eight color style and placement. get them to look where you want them to look.
WHITE SPACE / white space is the empty spaces in a design. it's is used to separate disparate design elements and group similar ones. -the lack of graphics or text in the layout. It’s not always “white” — it is the empty parts of the page, but if the page has a different background color that will be the color of the white space.

Life Span - elephants can live for up to 70 years
Elephants normally walk about 4 mph
Elephants are able to swim for long distances
Elephants spend about 16 hours a day eating
They consume as much as 495 pounds of food per day
They live in tight social units led by an older matriarch
Males leave the herd between the ages of 12 and 15

This project was great, even though mostly everything went not the way i planned.
Very proud of my great cardboard chair and frame. I compulsively sanded my frame for approx 900 hours today. Wood glue sucks but is great. Also, spent approx 900 hours at Home Depot trying to decide on a stain, or just a poly satin seal, or another stain. Went with the natural stain and am very pleased with the outcome (also it was the cheapest) It's a subtle color change but I think it really improves the visual pleasure of my frame. With the structure of my frame, i chose to go more simple. Sketches are a lot different than real life wood toolz, turns out. I'm really really happy with the way it turned out.
Wooden frames > wooden chairs.
Everything's fine.
